Surprisingly Fuel-Efficient Classic Cars

(RareCarMarket.com) – The classics are something many car enthusiasts want to have, even those that people typically don’t seek out. Of course, with the cost of gas drastically increasing, many classic cars are less attractive due to their tendency to be “gas guzzlers.” Fortunately, it is possible to combine classic cars with fuel efficiency.

It’s hard to imagine a classic car getting over 30 miles per gallon (mpg), but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Here are several examples:

  • Lotus Elise S1: From the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, the Elise S1 combined handling and a low curb weight allowing it to achieve around 36 mpg while still letting the driver have fun reaching speeds up to 118 mph and a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds.
  • Porsche Boxster 2.5: Before its upgrade in 2000, the Boxster sported a 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine. While critics claimed it wasn’t enough for the chassis, it allowed drivers to enjoy around 33 mpg.
  • Alfa Romeo GTV Twin Spark: The car’s light weight gave it great fuel economy (around 35 mpg) and exceptional handling, making it a fun and efficient car to drive.

As the video below mentions, the Mini Cooper and the BMW Z3 Roadster could also be on this list. These cars may be small, but their quickness and crisp handling make them fun to drive without sacrificing fuel economy.

You don’t have to trade looks, style, or even performance for better gas mileage; you just have to know what to look for and where to find it.
